Velocity fluctuations of initially stratified sedimenting spheres

چکیده
The study of velocity fluctuations in the sedimentation of spheres is complicated by the time evolution of the underlying particle distribution, both at the microscale and in the bulk. We perform a series of experiments and simulations to isolate the effect of an initial, stable stratification in the particle concentration. The directly observed dependence of velocity fluctuations on stratification agrees with a previously obtained scaling theory. © 2007 American Institute of Physics. #DOI: 10.1063/1.2806597$

Effects of container walls on the velocity fluctuations of sedimenting spheres.
Simulations describing the settling of suspensions of solid particles bounded by a rigid container are presented. Results are compared with previous simulations of homogeneous suspensions with periodic boundary conditions. Velocity fluctuations in vertically inhomogeneous suspensions are found to saturate under conditions similar to those found in laboratory experiments, while in vertically hom...
متن کاملDiffusive Dynamics of Interacting Particles in Equilibrium and under Hydrodynamic Sedimentation
Diffusive motion of particles plays an important role in many phenomena in surface physics, for example in chemical reactions, surface growth, and spreading. Diffusive motion can be observed in many different systems. In this thesis we study diffusion and dynamics in two fundamentally different kinds of systems: (i) in Brownian surface systems, and (ii) in a nonBrownian system of sedimenting pa...
متن کاملSubtle order in settling suspensions *
A dilute suspension of uniform, non-Brownian spheres settles slowly in a viscous solvent. The initially well-mixed system showing Poisson or random occupancy statistics evolves to a system having reduced number fluctuations, but otherwise appearing random. The reduced number fluctuations are consistent with recent measurements of velocity fluctuations in settling suspensions. These experimental...
متن کاملThe effect of stratification on the wave number selection in the instability of sedimenting spheroids
It is well known that a dilute suspension of spheroids sedimenting under gravity at low Reynolds number is unstable to density fluctuations as a result of hydrodynamic interactions D. L. Koch and E. S. G. Shaqfeh, J. Fluid Mech. 209, 521 1989 . Using a linear stability analysis, it is shown that a vertical density gradient in such a suspension can lead to a wave number selection by damping fluc...
متن کاملScreening mechanisms in sedimentation
This paper considers a mixture of sedimenting particles at low Reynolds numbers and volume fractions. Simple theoretical arguments have long suggested that for a random suspension of particles in an infinite system, the fluctuations in the velocity about the mean should diverge with system size. On the other hand, experiments have shown no such divergence. The primary goal of this paper is to e...
